When One Click Becomes Many: How a Compromised Account Can Impact an Entire Business Network

Recently, we assisted a client following a cyber security incident that serves as a timely reminder of how quickly a single compromised account can evolve into a much wider problem.

While it is often difficult to determine the exact initial attack vector, the evidence suggests that this was likely an automated phishing attack. The user’s Microsoft 365 account appears to have been compromised, giving attackers access to their mailbox and contact list.

Once inside the account, the attackers used the client’s legitimate email address to distribute further phishing and spam messages to known contacts. Because these emails came from a trusted sender, recipients were naturally more inclined to open them, click links, or interact with the content. Unfortunately, this led to additional accounts being compromised elsewhere, creating a ripple effect that extended beyond the original victim.

This type of attack highlights the importance of modern cyber security measures, particularly in environments where multiple smaller businesses operate closely together. Many organisations have strong relationships with suppliers, customers, partner companies, or sister businesses, regularly exchanging emails and documents. While these trusted connections help businesses operate efficiently, they can also be exploited by attackers when one organisation’s security is compromised.

Larger enterprises often benefit from advanced security tooling, dedicated IT security teams, and comprehensive monitoring solutions. Smaller organisations, however, may not always have access to the same level of protection, making them attractive targets for automated attacks. Cyber criminals understand that they do not always need to target large corporations directly. Instead, compromising one account within a network of smaller, interconnected businesses can provide a pathway to multiple organisations in a relatively short period of time.

Fortunately, our team was able to work quickly with the affected client to secure their Microsoft 365 environment, reset compromised credentials, revoke unauthorised access sessions, and review account activity. We also assisted with identifying affected accounts and ensuring that appropriate measures were taken to prevent further malicious activity.

As part of the recovery process, we implemented Huntress monitoring across the client’s Microsoft 365 tenant. Huntress provides additional visibility into suspicious activity, helping to identify threats earlier and enabling faster responses when unusual behaviour is detected. In today’s threat landscape, continuous monitoring is becoming just as important as traditional preventative measures.

Incidents like this serve as a reminder that cyber security is not simply about protecting individual devices or accounts. It is about understanding how interconnected modern businesses have become and ensuring that appropriate safeguards are in place at every level. A compromised mailbox may seem like a minor issue at first glance, but when that account is trusted by dozens or hundreds of contacts, the potential impact can grow rapidly.

While no organisation can eliminate cyber risk entirely, a combination of user awareness, multi-factor authentication, proactive monitoring, and a well-prepared response plan can significantly reduce both the likelihood and impact of an attack.

Cyber threats continue to evolve, but with the right protections and support in place, businesses can remain resilient and better prepared for whatever comes next.
